How to Choose the Perfect Gift for Your Host: A Complete Guide

With the holiday season upon us, you might be receiving invites to gatherings over the next few months. I enjoy giving hosts a small gift to let them know I appreciate being invited and them welcoming me into their home.

Wine is common, but I like to keep several small home goods in my closet that I can grab on short notice. Below are some ideas to keep on hand for the holiday season.

Candles

Everyone likes candles. You can't go wrong with this gift except perhaps a host that doesn't like scents. Even for those recipients, they can regift your item if necessary. Other than that, both women and men can use candles and it's great for the host that doesn't drink alcohol. Keep the fragrance light and fresh and purchase candles that come in nice packaging to elevate your gift. For Thanksgiving hosts, a holiday inspired scent is a good idea, but for Christmas gatherings, keep the scents non seasonal to ensure they can use your gift in the coming weeks.

Flowers

Hosts always enjoy fresh flowers. The downside in my opinion is that you can't keep these on hand. If going this route, make sure the flowers you provide are cut and neatly presented in a vase. A busy host won't have time to tend to flowers and we don't want to give them any more work.

Tips:

  • Presentation Matters: Wrap your gift nicely or use a decorative bag.

  • Know Your Host: Tailor the gift to the host’s tastes and preferences.

  • Budget-Friendly: Thoughtfulness is key; the cost of the gift is secondary to its sentiment.

Whichever you decide, bring something thoughtful and appreciated, enhancing the overall experience for both you and the host.
